爵士大師班是「Jazz-Go-Central, Jazz-Go-Fringe」的節目之一,由藝穗會及星期六爵士大樂隊統籌。樂隊邀請了來自日本的大樂隊編曲大師 内堀勝 為大樂隊成員進行指導,教授大樂隊編曲技巧。

大師班將會分成三部份:
1) 星期六爵士大樂隊將會演奏Duke Ellington的《Take the A Train》和Count Basie的《April in Paris》的原創版本。接著會演奏内堀勝大師重新編曲後的版本。觀眾聆聽之後,内堀勝大師便會解釋他如何為這兩首歌重新編曲。

2) 内堀勝大師會教授基本的音樂理論、和弦、節奏、形式和大樂隊的音樂特色。

3) 星期六爵士大樂隊將會演奏不同大樂隊編曲的版本,並由内堀勝大師加以評述。

是次大師班公開予大眾旁聽。所有樂器演奏者亦歡迎成為參加者,帶同樂器與樂隊一同演奏,甚至暫代樂隊成員的位置。若想向大師學習,讓音樂造詣更上一層樓,萬勿錯過是次的學習機會。

另外,在4月28日的「大樂隊之夜 - All That Swing」中,樂隊將會演奏由內堀勝編曲的作品。

内堀勝
内堀勝出生於東京,於高中時期參加了銅管樂團並開始學習長號。大學時加入了校內的大樂隊及銅管樂團,並師從渡邊貞夫先生學習爵士樂理,同時加入渡邊先生的彩排管弦樂團。内堀先生於1974年獲獎學金考入位於波士頓的伯克利音樂學院。畢業後他回到日本從事編曲的工作,作品的曲種十分廣泛。他於1995年成立了「内堀勝大樂隊」,每月定期演出。與他合作過的藝人包括: Tokyo Union Big Band與Jimmy Scott、Sharps and Flats Big Band與Helen Merrill、New Hard Big Band 與 Carroll Sloan、Blue Coats Big Band 與Salina Jones、New Japan Philharmonic、Air Self Defense Force Central Music Corps、以及Ground Self Defense Force Central Music Corps等等。

内堀先生曾多次被邀請為音樂比賽擔任評審,包括山野大樂隊音樂會、淺草爵士音樂會等。他也活躍於業餘樂隊的活動。他於2004年推出名為「WAYNE」的專輯,於2010年推出名為 「A Dedication To Jazz GIANTS」的專輯。

Jazz Masterclass is one of the programmes of the “Jazz-Go-Central, Jazz-Go-Fringe” project, co-ordinated by the Fringe Club and the Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra (SNJO). Japanese big band arranger Masaru Uchibori will conduct a masterclass on Big Band arrangement for band-members.

The masterclass will be divided into three parts:

1) The Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra will play the original scores of Take the A Train by Duke Ellington and or April in Paris by Count Basie followed by Uchibori-san’s arrangement. After listening, Uchibori-san will illustrate the making process and how he come up with such arrangement

2) Uchibori-san will then talk about basic music theory, harmony, rhythm, format and Big Band style.

3) SNJO will play different Big Band scores from old swing band to contemporary Big Band with Uchibori-san’s comments.

It’s open to the public to sit-in as audience. Musicians are also invited to be the participants, bring your own instrument to play together or replacing SNJO member's seat.

In the concert "Big Band Night - All That Swing" on April 28, the big band will perform pieces arranged by Masaru Uchibori.

Masaru Uchibori
Masaru Uchibori was born in Tokyo. At high school, he joined the school brass band, and has played trombone ever since. He was a member of the big band and the brass band at university, learning jazz theory from Mr. Sadao Watanabe and playing trombone in Watanabe’s rehearsal orchestra.

In 1974, Uchibori received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, and after graduating he returned to Japan, where he works as a freelance arranger of various music genres.

In 1995 he formed the Masaru Uchibori Big Band, which performs monthly. Since then, he has worked with many bands and musicians, including the Tokyo Union Big Band with Jimmy Scott, the Sharps and Flats Big Band with Helen Merrill, the New Hard Big Band with Carroll Sloan, the Blue Coats Big Band with Salina Jones, the New Japan Philharmonic, the Air Self Defense Force Central Music Corps and the Ground Self Defense Force Central Music Corps.

He has been the judge of many music contests, including the Yamano Big Band Contest and the Asakusa Jazz Contest, and is active in events for amateur bands. He has released two CDs: WAYNE (2004) and A Dedication To Jazz Giants (2010).
